In this edition of AI Outtakes, we explore the challenges of conveying abstract concepts like AI through the use of emojis and robot imagery. Despite the difficulty in generating specific concepts, AI consistently produces impressive and visually appealing robot images.

AI Outtakes, Vol. 7

Hi and welcome to the seventh (!) edition of AI Outtakes! In this edition we're focusing on a topic that AI does amazingly well at; robots.

Possibly because they don't have fingers or hair.

When you're writing about AI, conveying concepts can be really challenging because as a concept it's pretty abstract. If you've used a product lately that's added an AI component, almost always they use a magic wand emoji ( 馃獎 ) or a robot emoji ( 馃 ). So when we write about AI at Orchestra we figure, why not both?

Not bad at all! Kind of tiny though.

Okay, well good images, not exactly what I'm looking for. Let's see if AI can generate robot wizards doing more normal things.

An absolutely beautiful photo, although not what I wanted

I'm always astonished by the things AI can come up with, literally in seconds. This is a fantastic photo. It messed up the human hand of course, but overall solid.

Not usable for my purpose but also a cute robot, and it has pens for hands!

One of the articles we're working on for Orchestra is a review of Canva's Magic Studio - their suite of generative AI tools they launched last week. All of the tools have pretty generic names; 'magic' plus the thing the tool does. I tried a few of these with generative AI and never got a usable image but got some pretty fun results.

I figured with 'grab' I'd get robot fingers and was not disappointed.

Ok, generative AI is skewing more robot. Can we ask it to be more balanced?

Maybe 'half' isn't working? What about cyborg?

Well, this process taught us that even though AI has trouble generating very specific concepts, it will always give you a good-looking robot, even if you didn't ask for one.

Until next time!
