Generative AI is great at creating images that resemble what you asked for, but upon closer inspection, there are often strange and unexpected details.

AI Outtakes, Vol. 4

Welcome to volume 4 of AI Outtakes! Generative AI is soooo good at making images that look like what you asked for, as long as you don't look too closely at any specific detail. Some examples:

an 8k image of a row of houses that are all exactly the same

Not 'all exactly the same, but a decent image? OR IS IT
Not 'all exactly the same, but a decent image? OR IS IT

If you just glance at this you might think, okay not what the prompt asked for but a fine representation of city street. But then you notice the yellow and brown houses have trees growing out of them, suggesting the interiors are entirely plants?

This looks like what I asked for!

A pretty solid image! Fits the theme, we'll ignore the wood all over the ground for a second. But then you see it:

That's a biiiig hat!

Is Hagrid on this construction crew? Whose hat is that?

Yes, the lawn mower is oversized. But at least he doesn't know how to use it.

They're racing.

This picture needs a checkered flag.

Sometimes you go for what seems like a simple prompt and the results are surprising. For all of its inherent biases, I kind of love what AI gives you when you ask it for a picture of a family.

Generative image AI's inability to produce letters and words is pretty well established at this point. If you try to get it to generate a word it'll usually come out like graffiti (which AI is actually really good at, as the cover photo for this issue shows). Not being able to generate accurate letters and words means AI just isn't suitable for a lot of stock photo use cases, but it doesn't stop me from trying!

Letters are jammed together and it doesn't say SOLD, but pretty close! I think AI can do this!

Hilariously wrong, but also these people need to clear the weeds from their walkway.

Still doing the FOR SOLD thing eh? Solid.

I hope you enjoyed this edition of AI Outtakes as much as I did putting it together. This has been one of the best parts of building Orchestra AI and I'm glad to share it with you. Until next week:
